"Tokyo Jazz Joints" is a project by Northern Irish photographer Philip Arneil.
The project title, which incorporates the slang word "Joint" for shop, began in Tokyo and traveled across Japan over the course of three years to document beloved jazz cafes and jazz bars. Places visited included renowned establishments such as Iwate's BASIE, Kyoto's jazz spot YAMATOYA, Tokyo's jazz cafes Eagle and Erect Saruman, and Kanagawa's Downbeat.
These spaces, where jazz lovers listen and sometimes share their love of jazz, are a uniquely Japanese culture, and Arneil has become fascinated by its intrigue while living in Japan.
In 2015, he embarked on a project with his friend and collaborator, American broadcast journalist James Catchpole, to photograph these everyday cultural heritage sites, which are gradually disappearing with the times.
Published by a German publisher in 2023, this work captivated readers worldwide. Now, with the original Japanese edition, this long-awaited release is here!
